A monumental of change has happened in Italy in less than fifty years. Imagine, in 1976 only five estates were bottling their own wine with Rapitalà being one of the first five. Another first for the dynamic winery was the planting of French varietals anywhere in all of Sicily. The winery was established by Gigi Guarrasi of Palermo and her husband Count Hugues Bernard de la Gatinais of France when the couple inherited Guarrasi's family estate on the heels of an earthquake. Determind, the couple used the disaster as a pivotal time to dream big and replanted many of the vineyards and completely rebuild the winery. The 'Alto' is a single vineyard Nero d'Avola, perhaps the most quintessential of Sicilian red grapes. 'Alto' is Italian for high which is an understatement for this elegant Nero d'Avola's terroir which delivers a spice-tinged, red and black fruited rich style with a zesty finish.
