Giuseppe Russo’s top reds mark for me Etna's extreme of both fruit purity and textural tenderness. And the ‘19s particularly so, a set capped with this superbly elegant single-site.
‘Feudo’ is a parcel-within-a-parcel bottling isolating a little island of 70 year old vines within a larger holding Russo separates out for standalone bottling. It’s almost entirely Mascalese with just a slash of co-planted Cappuccio raised entirely in large neutral barrel.
A wonderful raspberry intensity on the nose and then the smoky volcanic wisps behind. I love that this granitic aspect remains subtle and inferential, a welcome swerve from the too-gushy minerality you often find here. A supple mouthfeel frames the vivid and impressively pure fruit beautifully. Just a dusting of tannin on the finish yet a notable contribution to both sweetness and length.
Gorgeous stuff, indeed at the very top of its category.
