One of the oldest estates in Pomerol, Château Rouget was originally planted by the ancient Romans and has, since then, been in the hands of a few different families. Since 1992, it has been owned by the Labruyere family, whose winemaking experience was mostly in areas of Burgundy. The family saw the potential to restore and improve the Rouget estate, though, which had excellent parcels near well-known Pomerol producers like Château Petrus and Le Pin. In 1997, the winemaking consultant Michel Rolland was hired, and the vineyard holdings expanded, as were the plantings of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
