Le Vieux Donjon, as befits an arch-traditionalist, continues to produce a single cuvée of Châteaneuf du Pape. Our prevailing single-site mania threatens to antiquate blending, though lovers of classic CDP know better. In this place combination rather than isolation makes the difference. The region's greatest vignerons are its ablest aggregators (sites, varietals), Le Vieux Donjon and Clos des Papes first among them.
The 2016 is clearly the strongest modern day example of this routinely excellent cuvée. The nose offers up a lovely amalgam of lavender and pepper, kirsch liqueur and black raspberries, sage and spring flowers. Three hours in the fruit remains alert and fresh and clear.
If you have the space and the patience consider cellaring a few. The other-side reward may well exceed even Donjon's strongest efforts from the ‘80s and ‘90s. High praise.
