1988-1990 Roty: gonna have a good time. Having had the privilege to open many bottles in recent years I’m still waiting on a single entrant uneager to surpass expectations.
I’m partial to the compact, classically-built 1988s. The wines seem almost a caricature of this intellectually-styled vintage and its distinct meaty, prosciutto-like aromatics. Tasted in trio with its two successor vintages the 1988s initially come off as stodgy and distant. What they need, as with other strong 1988s, is a wide glass and our undivided attention.
Though it’s now been several years since tasting I remember a circa-2019 bottle of this to be just crawling out of adolescence. Meaty-savory, yes, but the blue/black fruit fresh as a daisy. Bags of life.
