In 2022 the distance between Jean-Marc Roulot’s strongest lieu-dits and his four premiers crus is nearly invisible. We noticed this first tasting the set last year and, more recently, pressure-tested the theory with a ‘Les Luchets’ (lieu-dit) and ‘Clos des Bouchères’ (premier cru) side-by-side tasting.
The full Meursault range shows splendid concentration and intensity this year, which is to say we don’t necessarily graduate on to completer wines at the top end. In fact the hillside cuvées - ‘Les Tillets’ and ‘Les Luchets’ in particular - utilize higher acidities to sequence fruit and mineral inputs even more persuasively than their putatively superior cellarmates.
The two wines mentioned above, ‘Les Tillets’ and ‘Les Luchets,’ are the wines I’d most want in my own cellar this year. Today both display a spring-loaded compaction of flavor that should uncoil elegantly over the next decade. I prefer ‘Les Luchets’ narrowly, its extra bit of fleshy citrus more fully covering the structural bones.
Cheers,
Jason
