It’s a perpetual challenge (accepted!) to find high character White Burgundy priced at or below $35. ‘You need to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a prince’ sums the exercise nicely.
Gilles Buisson’s 2023 Bourgogne Blanc is a princely find. Like many of the category’s completest examples, this Bourgogne utilizes the art of blending to create a composite more interesting than its components. Most of the fruit comes from the family’s holdings toward the top of St.-Romain, though a smaller contribution of Mâconnais fruit (via friends at Domaine Guillot-Broux) adds both complexity and textural richness.
The nose of lemon and subtler apricot adds intriguing chamomile-y depth with time. Flowers too, adding tension and an unexpected counterpoint to 2023’s lush fruit. There’s more structural footing here than many 2023 villages tasted to date.
Lovely to watch the Côte d’Or and Mâconnais meld so seamlessly. Even so, the wine never loses sight of their individual contributions - refinement here, richness there.
Cheers,
Jason
