An overachieving vintage from a perennially overachieving Château: as sure a bargain hunting formula as one can dream up. Add to this a quarter century of thoughtful cellaring and we’re landed on the short list of pound-for-pound outliers, none more outlier-y than this 2001 Lagrange.
Lagrange practices absurdly strict selection for their grand vin (less than 40% of each vintage makes the final blend). Selection prioritizes density and structure, qualities always apparent in young examples. But the wine ages beautifully.
This 2001 windows a wine at its ideal power / development inflection point. The tannins are fully resolved yet still provide traction around the edges while the cellar-sweetened fruit yet retains subtle youthful flushes. Certain drinkers will prefer another decade’s complexity; I find this perfectly à point today.
Cheers,
Jason
