Pierre Duroché’s 2014s are the origin story of his well-earned perfectionist reputation. True, his 2012s and 2013s glimpse authentic originality, a voice behind the wines meaningfully different from the generation preceding. But only in 2014 are we given the sleekly refined textures and ultra-pure fruit that have haunted these wines since.
The domaine’s ‘Latricières’ has become a rare bird. Truer, perhaps, to say it has always been one (owning just .28 ha here) and that an upsurge in demand has next-leveled scarcity. Understandably so as ‘Latricières’ is the sweet spot grand cru here: a step up from downslope neighbors ‘Charmes’ and 'Mazoyères,’ and far less expensive than ‘Clos de Bèze’ or ‘Griottes.’
Part of the magic is a location within ‘Latricières’ at the northern end of the vineyard directly abutting ‘Chambertin.’ The choicest spot in this singular grand cru and the wine seems to know it.
Cheers,
Jason
