2021 marks Fred Cossard’s last vintage at the helm of his Domaine de Chassorney.  His retirement is thankfully only partial as Fred will continue to vinify his ‘Fred Cossard’ (i.e. negoçe) line.

Voluntary retirement allows for deliberate final statement and the slender, red-fruited style of 2021 teed up a seemingly perfect medium for parting thoughts.  Clusters are never far from the surface of Cossard’s reds unless nature forces them there; 2021's midweight, delicate personality seems to deliberately clear space for a full flood of stem-derived potpourri and herbes de Provence.

The 2021 Volnay ‘Les Lurets’ leads with pretty, lifted notes of wild strawberries, lavender, and allspice.  Floral impressions take off immediately, as if the wine intended more at the outset and so turned to self-correcting.  The palate offers several distinct and developed lines: bing cherries, thyme/sage/lavender, the flowers rushing in again on the finish.  We’re shown the delicate particulars of the vintage though none of its potential excesses.

A lovely parting gift.

Cheers,

Jason
