Renaud continues to be shortlisted as one of our most exciting addresses in Burgundy. While you won’t find famous appellations on the labels, you will be treated to unusually compelling and refined expressions of sites you didn’t care about before but now realize you should.  They are, though, maddeningly hard to find.

Our revelatory moment with Renaud came in the form of the 2018 Beaune ‘Prévolles’ which we discovered earlier this year.  Issuing from a visually uninspiring vineyard and a vintage prone to top-heaviness, this 2018 was strikingly vital, verdant and vividly red-fruited.  And now this! The wine shows the lovely and accessible side of ’20, pure and forward with an irresistible scent of red berries.  It is a ‘little wine’ with more than a little to say.  If you haven’t discovered these irresistibly distinctive wines, it’s time! - Jason

Boyer wines offer superb detail and delicate floral bouquets- he's clearly towards the highest level of whole-cluster producers out there.  This is hands-down one of the best Bourgogne rouges you can find from the vintage, which can frequently show wines which are too rich and full.  This wine displays beautiful wild strawberries, dried cranberries, and crunchy red fruit on the nose with beautifully ripe stem notes without anything green.  I love the tension and find this to be truly exciting with great layers and energy.  Epic and delicious! - Daniel

This is an unbelievably pure and vivid wine from a domaine that is little-known and painfully hard to come by. Renaud Boyer continues to demonstrate that he is an essential address for those that love airy, floral and impeccably elegant Red Burgundy.

This Bourgogne Rouge comes from 40 year old vines on the east facing slopes on the Southern side of St. Romain. As with all of Renaud's wines, the farming is biodynamic and is painstakingly diligent. The wine is fermented whole bunch and macerated for approximately 3 weeks. There are no pump overs and just one gentle pigeage, yielding very little and very fine tannins. As usual, despite there being no sulfur additions, the wine is clean and free of any obtrusive natty character or reduction for that matter.

The 2020 Bourgogne Rouge is surprisingly pale and luminous for a vintage that seems already to be full of notably dark examples. Floral aromatics burst from the nose along with bright cherry and pomegranate. Lightly spiced but with an overriding sense of purity to the energetic fruit. The palate has a fine supple texture along with tingling acidity. This is a stunning Bourgogne Rouge to light your way.

Cheers,

- Spencer
