Part comes from younger vines below, part from 85 year old vines above. Picked 8th September at 14.1%. Pale trim to the light yellow colour. A whisper of sulphur shows after the racking. A big step up here with extra layers of ripe fruit, which absolutely fill the mouth, then a gorgeous saline acidity, which complements very well. Not for nothing is Les Ancégnières an emblematic cuvée chez PYCM. - Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
Aromas of pear, orange oil and mint, framed by a deft touch of oak, the 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ancegnières is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with an enveloping core of fruit, tangy acids and fine depth at the core. From a parcel located below Bâtard-Montrachet, this is always a very dependable bottling chez Colin, and this year is no exception. - William Kelley, Robert Parker Wine Advocate
This is an emblematic cuvée for Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey and as usual this is a huge over-achiever in the range, delivering a quality that belies its price point (a fraction of his Grand Crus, or even most of his Premier Crus for that matter). This unusually spelled lieu-dit is much smaller than its counterpart in Puligny but is likewise ideally sited beneath the Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet.
Pierre-Yves has a small parcel of 0.25ha that comes from his father's side, the Domaine Marc Colin. Some of the vines here are quite exceptionally old, planted in the '30s.
The 2019s here are a great success with Pierre-Yves blocking malo in a number of his barrels per cuvée to retain fresh acidity to balance the ripe, intense fruit. He has also dialed down the sulfur additions, leading to more immediately aromatically accessible wines. Across the range the wines have fantastic energy and incisive minerality, but the Ancégnières is a particular delight.
There is an intense nose of pear and lime zest, with white flowers and cold butter. There's a glossy texture to the wine, augmented by a beautiful structure and brisk acidity. There's beautiful layering of savory almond and custard elements with ripe citrusy fruit. Accessible and quite hedonistic now, and likely for a long time to come. A wine to stockpile if possible, but alas quantities are limited...
Cheers,
- Spencer
