The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Vergelesses 1er Cru is more backward than the Talmettes on the nose, but sports just as much precision and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, firm tannins and good acidity that segues into a more elegant and silky-smooth finish, leaving a touch of sea salt on the aftertaste. - Neal Martin, Vinous
Wines from the Domaine Simon Bize have been outstanding in recent years and it feels as though Chisa is enjoying a most consistent run even with highly variable vintages. The winemaking, for those unfamiliar with the domaine, is centered around almost 100% whole cluster vinification and minimal impressions of new wood. There remains a healthy amount of pigeage by foot and frequent pumping over. These are wines that show well in their youth but make astonishing old bones.
The 2018s are quite the success for the domaine in both colors. There is more black fruit in evidence to be sure than is typical but the wines have both wonderful fresh acidity and elegant rounded tannins. The subtlety of stem spice and the overall intensity of perfume across the wines is excellent.
'Aux Vergelesses' is one of the finest sites in the village, an iconic east and south-east facing vineyard at the northern limit of Savigny beneath the Bois de Nöel. The red wines that issue from it regularly combine pronounced floral notes with firm but fine tannins.
The 2018 'Aux Vergelesses' pours a hale ruby in the glass and the nose features lush dark cherry and crushed violets. There’s a well integrated combination of spice and damp earth as well. The palate has a nice density of sweet fruit but with wonderfully tight tannins that are nonetheless not drying. Svelte, youthful and with excellent balance from fresh acidity, this is a great Bize to enjoy without requiring too much patience. We're happy to offer this at the lowest price in the country.
