What a fun opportunity to taste a humble wine from J-Y Bizot and Claire Naudin. This world class husband & wife team made a lifted, high-toned, and expressive 100% whole-cluster Pinot Noir. You’ll see pretty amazing flavor expression from this wine: old peppercorn and bright cherry. So fun. - Daniel
Binaume = Claire Naudin and Jean-Yves Bizot: Burgundy’s senior power couple! This is their négoçe, and, at this price, this 2018 constitutes an almost charitable contribution to the wine world.
Along with Gonon’s ‘Les Îles Feray’ and Rayas’ ‘La Pialade,’ Binaume’s ‘La Plante’ is the Platonic ideal of a bistro wine, and unlike the others, one that most of us can afford to drink. Now if only it were easier to find… - Jason
After the devastating Spring frost of 2016 where Claire lost the majority of her crop, she formed BiNaume with her husband Jean-Yves Bizot (the name puns on Binôme- two names). 160km South West of the Côte de Nuits, they source Pinot Noir and Gamay from Saint-Pourçain in the Allier (a neighbouring department, hence ‘The plant next door.’) Interestingly this Pinot is grown on sandy soil (unlike the limestone-clay mix typical of the Côte d’Or) and it is harvested by Claire before being driven via refrigerated truck for the 2 hours it takes to get back to the domaine. She and Jean-Yves then vinify the fruit whole cluster before aging in tank and bottling unfiltered with a microdose of sulfur.
The 2018 ‘Plante d’à Côté’ is bright and floral, with roses and peony atop the fresh cherry fruit. The palate is terrifically gentle with vibrant raspberry and a touch of pepper towards the finish. It’s a marvelous and exuberant wine, one perfect for enjoyment as Summer eves turn to Autumn nights. It’s especially enjoyable served a touch below room temp with a plate full of charcuterie and across from the apple of your eye. These are the lowest prices in the US and I’d advise you to stock up- while you'll want to have some on hand year-round, we only receive this once a year.
