‘Cordeloux’ is classic Côte Rôtie in the way all true classics ought to aspire: to erase the wine and its memory would fundamentally alter our perception of Côtie Rôtie classicism. A good bottle of Benetière, like all true classics, seems to articulate a general truth rather than a mere point of view.
‘Cordeloux’ issues from the lieu-dit ‘Corps de Loup’ at the appellation’s southern extreme. Granite soils and a splash of Viognier help account for the aromatic exuberance so routine in this bottling, though even ripe vintages never quite spill into black fruit. A cooler, more chipper blue-fruited register is the ‘Cordeloux’ calling card.
Lovely 2011s here. The vintage is a personal favorite generally and for its Mediterranean aromatics particularly. Even destemmed wines seem perfumed with clusters. Though just mid-weight we’re gifted the intensity and depth of a ‘big’ vintage. Fragrant and charming, the mode here is elegant understatement, a clear preference for speaking well over speaking much.
Cheers,
Jason
