Issuing from one of Barolo’s highest elevation sites, Giulia Negri’s ‘Serradenari’ has become her little domaine’s most emblematic wine. The cool, late-ripening parcel seems to gift exactly the kind of grapes she’s looking for, sourcing a cuvée of notable detail and refinement.
‘Serradenari’ is all about texture. Young, the tannins present as pliant and gracious, ‘small’-seeming to the point where they add just a gentle dusting to the fruit. The wine always seems to glide across the palate, though the impact is one of complex intensity rather than mere 'lightness.'
The 2017 leads with bright, petal-y aromatics together with notes of red fruit and smoke. Everything is red-spectrumed, roses and raspberries and redcurrants coordinating a wonderfully perfumed freshness. The palate is open and inviting, following the nose’s path then widening into a surprisingly fruit-rich middle.
A wine equally up to the tasks of pleasurable early drinking and long, positive evolution in the cellar. Always a superb value, this betters the standard with best-in-country pricing.
Cheers,
Jason
