What a find here. ‘Value’ isn’t quite right given the term’s limiting ‘inexpensive without tasting so’ coloring. This is serious wine priced as not serious wine, plain and simple.
At a dinner party a couple weeks back conversation turned to rising prices for Rioja’s top wines. ‘If we can’t find great Rioja - long the most affordable of the Old World's great traditional reds - below $100, is anything sacred?’ I emailed every person at that dinner within 5 minutes of tasting this 2014 Reserva from La Antigua.
The nose leads with a good helping of Rioja’s mellow earthiness and cellar funk freshened with strawberries and black raspberries. Surprisingly perky and red-fruited, a stance that holds as the wine opens. Savory depth and clear fruit play off one another like shadow and light, a lovely effect.
