An inevitable reality of tasting mature wines is that those wines most worth offer spotlighting are rarely available in quantities needed to do so. It’s a familiar problem: taste something at peak, get excited, then look for a young vintage of that same wine on whose behalf we might forecast an equally satisfying maturity.
Today’s offer skips the last of these steps. And good timing too, as the kirsch liqueur and Provençal herb-scented nose has reached its obvious expressive peak. We're at that inflection point where the fruit has civilized yet remains impressively exuberant, and the whole French countryside - olives, thyme, lavender - floods through its support. There's a very Grenache feel throughout, most memorably in the wild strawberries and red cherries that resist darker Mourvèdre-like shading even as the wine opens.
