This past Spring Daniel and I hosted a tasting of wines from Maxime Cheurlin’s early years helming his Vosne-based domaine. These vintages - 2012, 2013, 2014 - continue to represent one of Burgundy’s swiftest progresses in recent memory. Young producers pump personality into their wines often enough but rarely achieve this level of substance and coherence.
Maxime’s wines from this era are irresistibly exuberant and supple. They are above all fun to drink. But beneath the hedonism we’re shown a nuanced sensitivity to site that makes for more lasting pleasures.
A personal favorite is the Nuits ‘Aux Boudots.’ Ancient vines contribute two to three more layers than other examples of this vineyard, even strong ones, manage to capture. ‘Les Beaux Monts’ ages particularly well, perhaps best of the various premiers produced here.
Cheers,
Jason
