2005 Tuscans are children of a vintage on the brink. Wines achieved or did not achieve ripeness in a photo finish. Those on the wrong side of the year are delicate to the point of fragility though stronger ones add satisfying intensity to their cool-vintage structure. They’re wines on the knife edge in a way that reminds me of 2008 Red Burgundies.
I love to order the wines off lists when I find them. Better examples, like this delicious Riserva from Castello di Ama, offer a sense of purity and grace unmatched inside their decade.
The nose leads with alert red fruit along with subtler shadings of spice and sage. Rain-on-leaves and good truffles with time. This is elegant in the sense that you can actually enjoy it without food, a criteria for elegance Sangiovese admirers will understand.
Not a vintage for buying blind into but one very much rewarding careful attention. Relatively few wines managed to cross the bridge. Here’s one.
Cheers,
Jason
