Traditional vs. modern, most tempting of Old World stylistic distinctions, nevertheless feels increasingly inadequate. Today stylistic preference is less and less a question of either/or conformity. Fewer winemakers too any longer attach traditional or modern approvingly to their wines in awareness that larger expressive space exists between rather than at extremes.
La Antigua Clasico’s 2019 Rioja Blanco illustrates this. The lime and honey scent, the puff of salty flor, ooze classic Rioja. And yet the crystalline purity and soft, subtly wax-like texture are La Antigua uniquenesses. The effect improves considerably on the clichéd 'traditional meets modern.' To so freshly and persuasively frame regional expression is rare at any price point, exceptionally so south of $25.
