Here’s an address you would have oftener seen here were its wines not so difficult to find. An importer friend (not this country’s) has shared enough bottles for us to fall for them but never in real quantity. For once we have a little to share.
Guillon's wear their Gevrey garb proudly. Textures are deep and dense and meaty. Fruit profiles track purply and rich, and ageability is a family trait.
When young the wines show a toastiness not unlike young Rouget or Tremblay. As at these others this oak is transitory and within a few years subsumes easily into the fruit. Spice notes and the creamy texturizing effect of the wood remains but woody flavors do not.
The 2012 Gevrey ‘Vieilles Vignes’ illustrates this evolution beautifully. The sweetly ripe nose oozes old-vine Gevrey though ripeness remains grounded in soil and shiitakes. Almost chocolate-y with time. I especially love the texture. How such a rich wine approaches elegance remains a mystery. Not an angle or edge in sight.
Cheers,
