Vincent Legou spent nearly a decade at Domaine de la Romanée Conti before charting out on his own in 2008. He has brought DRC‘s philosophy of late picking, whole cluster, and use of high-quality, stylishly integrated oak to his own wines.

Rather than Grand Cru monopoles, Legou is working with small parcels, many of which are sited off the proverbial beaten track. His wines are less orchestral than DRC‘s, and yet that pulsing energy and slick stylistic imprint of DRC remains lucidly felt. This Hautes Côtes will challenge assumptions about how dimensional and nuanced this appellation’s wines can be.  The wine has a beautifully clear purple fruit profile peppered with perfume and floral notes, the stems evident but unobtrusive. This is a wine to buy by-the-case for those seeking  a cheerful reminder that $40 can still carry you very, very far in Burgundy… - Jason

If you’ve been conditioned to think that Burgundy doesn’t offer great value or that a $40 Burgundy cannot be serious and pleasurable, then this is a perfectly delightful counter-example. I cannot, at this moment, think of a better bottle at this price point for those looking for aromatic expressiveness and complexity or for light-footed finely-structured palates.

What is true of Burgundy is that it is complex and expansive, and helping to navigate this terrain and these cellars is something of a raison d’être for us at Somm Cellars. We are here to find great Burgundy at all price points. At sub-$40 in particular, voilà- the widely unknown producer Vincent Legou producing wines of preternatural class and the less than famous terroir of Hautes-Côtes de Nuits ‘Le Corton’ uniting to offer serious Burgundy you can drink by the case.

The wine itself is a pale ruby in the glass with masses of compressed florals on the nose which can almost read as reduction at first, then the great pleasure of Vosne-spice transposed to where it can’t be yet is. The palate is lightweight with fine chalky tannins and bright acidity. A luminous and quietly symphonic wine. Direct from the domaine, this is the only availability worldwide.
