Cossard is one of those producers whose wines, “when they’re on, they’re on.” 2017 is one of my favorite vintages from him, and this wine is already ready to show its layers and details. The nose shows tons of red berries with plenty of gamey Morey spice. These aromatics are rounded out with sous bois and dried flowers. On the palate, it’s open for business with beautiful sour cherries and nice whole cluster spice.
I love the purity and vibrancy of the wine with its super energetic fruit. The mid-palate offers great intensity, super fine tannins and a silky texture. This wine reminds me of the youthful stage of Domaine Leroy, so if you are a fan of young whole-cluster flamboyant red Burgundy, this is the perfect wine for you. The plot is located in the heart of the Monts Luisants, coming from 70 years old super rare Pinot Fin which explains the energy here. Sick wine! - Daniel
Until recently I found these sometimes-superb wines a bit inconsistent. Cossard has always been an intuitively gifted winemaker, and yet his natural and 100% whole cluster style could sometimes yield awkward results. That said, I was astonished at his ‘17s, the most complete and consistent lineup I’ve ever tasted from Cossard.
‘Monts Luisants’ is sited just above ‘Clos de la Roche’ and offers a lucid sense of this hillside vineyard. There is a flash of wildness, birthed by the vineyard and amplified by Cossard’s style, which adds lovely top notes to the delicate red fruit quality that we oftener associate with this village’s southern neighbor Chambolle. All together, this sleekly textured and extra-expressive Morey smartly weds transparency and very stylish winemaking. - Jason
From this fascinating and steep vineyard, one of few to comprise Grand Cru, Premier Cru and Villages components (and the only permitted to yield premier cru Aligoté!), Frederic Cossard has produced the gem of his impressive 2017 lineup. The wine pours a dusty rose ruby and from the glass an entrancing perfume emanates- I won't add anymore than my colleagues already have. This is breathtakingly beautiful wine and this is the only US availability.
