How are these wines still under the radar?  They have been reliable for as long as I can remember, and have become purer and more texturally nuanced in the last half dozen years.  The style trends towards transparency and understatement, very much evident in this ’14.  This has wonderful purity, very red fruited, with that compact intensity of the vintage.  This presents an intersection of Nuits’ structure and Vosne’s ethereal perfume, a memorable marriage.  I would peek at this now if you’d like to glimpse it’s emerging potential, and wait a further five years for a looser structure and more dimensional wine.  Lovely juice here. -  Jason

We’re thrilled to have received another small parcel of this most exceptional cuvée, and to be offering it at the lowest price in the country. Pascal Mugneret returned to his family domaine in 2005, leaving a career as an engineer, and since 2012 he has really come into his own. He is clearly a thoughtful winemaker, working along biodynamic lines and adjusting the percentage of whole cluster according to the demands of the vintage. The way he expresses himself on his informative website is commendable. "Everything I learned as an engineer has been useful – everything except to be Cartesian. You have to be tough and straight – but winemaking is a mix of reason and the heart. The problem is to find the right balance."

I cannot question his decision to no longer bottle the Boudots (from 2017) and to separate his parcels in Aux Cras and La Richemone. Tasting his remarkable Boudots however, I will certainly miss this cuvée, completely harmonious as it is. Boudots (along with the aforementioned lieux-dits that usually pass unmentioned under its name) is particularly blessed vineyard to me and best conveys the perfect symbiosis of Nuits and Vosne that one finds so close to the the border with Les Malconsorts.

The 2014 Boudots has a densely layered nose of sultry black cherry, abundant rose and gentle oak spice. There's also a touch of sarsaparilla and pepper. The palate has opulent tannins and again a persistent spice with sweet tannin. The texture is pure and the finish lengthy. Already very satisfying, it is clear that with 3-5 more years, this will further knit together into a seamless whole. Overall a very convincing demonstration of the magic of these vineyards at the border of Vosne.

Cheers,

Spencer
