A close friend is an ’88 baby and each April we parade out a lineup of that vintage’s wines.  It’s become a nice annual excuse for checking in on a Bordeaux vintage I've always found fascinating.

Structure rather than fruit has always led its Left Bank examples and the question - a particularly urgent one a third of a century on - is whether the wines are or are not delicious.  Most are interesting and plenty are impressive but even when the wines are ‘on’ they can leave us oddly chilly.  The relative few with enough richness to make fun drinkers are evergreen pleasures.

Even pre-decanting you’ll likely note the supple and flavory mid-palate which stretches well beyond ’88’s usual expressivity.  Typical for this era at Talbot this will appeal immensely to lovers of old school Bordeaux, those happy to find a bit of barnyard in with the leather and coffee.

Cheers,

Jason
