'Blanchots Dessus,' today arguably Chassagne's most gifted premier cru, simply was 'Montrachet' for nearly all its history.  In fact, you won't find 'Blanchots Dessus' on labels before the second half of the 19th century, its wines being bottled as 'Montrachet' until then.

The vineyard is tiny, barely over a hectare, and fractured ownership compounds scarcity.  No one owns much, no one makes much, and we seldom have enough to offer.  This small parcel marks a rare exception, particularly considering it comes paired with a top growing season and a decade's maturing.

Among the premier cru satellites of ‘Montrachet’ none bear closer in-glass resemblance than ‘Blanchots Dessus.’  In fact I find its character closer even than grands crus ‘Criots’ or ‘Bâtard,' both of which are texturally further afield.  The ‘Montrachet’ difference is achieved by reconciling opposites - succulence and tension, richness and detail - into an expressive synthesis distinct from its neighboring grands crus.  Yet ‘Blanchots Dessus’ unfolds similarly, a wine too prioritizing mineral intensity over flesh or size.

As with ‘Montrachet,’ cataloging individual aromas or flavors misses the point.  You’ll successfully find as many fruit and mineral descriptors as you put your mind to but the real beauty here is spherical and comprehensive rather than the sum-of-parts variety.

Cheers,

Jason
