Although Domaine de Chezeaux is a domaine on the smaller side of production, they are the largest owner of Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru- nearly 60% of the vineyard. Clos St Denis, Chambertin, and some parcels of Gevrey Premier Cru are also under the domaine’s partial ownership, though typically unfamiliar since the wines are under different labels.
Formed in 1982, the holdings are owned by the esteemed Mercier family who operate the umbrella company called SNC des Chezeaux. Most of the ownership of the land dates back to the early 1930s, but since there has never been any winemaking on the Mercier family side; the holdings are all ‘en metayage’ meaning they are ‘farmed’ by others. Well-established names such as Ponsot, Leclerc, and Berthaut take up over 60% of the crop as payment, while the rest is produced under the Domaine des Chezeaux label.
