After emigrating with his wife from Poland to Gevrey-Chambertin in the late 1930s, Stanislaus Serafin survived combat and imprisonment abroad during WWII before returning in 1945 to become a vigneron. The Serafins purchased their first vines in 1947. Their son Christian began working with them at the Domaine in 1957 and together they built a house and cellar on the property just below the 1er Cru Cazetiers vineyard. In the mid-1980s Christian began bottling all the production at the estate and exporting the wines, which drew international acclaim. Additional 1er Cru plots in Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis were purchased in 1996. Today the 5.5 hectare estate is in the hands of the family’s third generation – Christian’s daughter Karine and her cousin Frederique Goulley. They maintain the Domaine’s guiding principles of meticulous care in the vineyards, which are now entirely organic, and a passion for fantastically complex, full-bodied wines. Grapes are hand harvested and de-stemmed, fermentations are natural. The wines are aged for 14-20 in months in oak – 2/3 new for village wines and 100% new for the rest – before bottling without fining or filtration.
