What a surprise. This rare 100% Counoise somehow tastes like 50% Fonsalette and 50% Morey-Saint-Denis. So elegant and seductive! - Daniel
This is so aromatic one might rightly think it were aromatized, save for the purity and delicacy of its fragrance. A lovey concoction of pomegranate and flowers, with citrus peel freshness. There is a vital, elemental power to this Counoise that has had us squinting at the glass since we discovered its charms… - Jason
“We think it's the most exciting thing we're doing. We found a little Counoise at this new vineyard called Nolan Ranch. It was cuttings of Counoise brought over by Beaucastel for Tablas Creek. Château Pradeaux and Beaucastel... both got back to us and said, "This is the grape of the future, especially in a warming climate, a warming planet. It's a grape that retains good acidity, it has incredible aromatics. We should do it whole cluster”.” - Lyle Railsback*
From Eric and Lyle Railsback comes the hottest grape of this August, Counoise. Light colored and light bodied, this rarely encountered variety is capable of expressing pretty red fruit, peppery notes and beautiful florality as well. Their small 0.88 acre (0.35ha) parcel in Alisos Canyon AVA in Santa Ynez has in 2020 produced fruit with tension and freshness. A truly fantastic surprise that reminds you why exploration in wine can be so rewarding.
This Counoise pours a pale red and I was caught off-guard by the intense aromatics of this young wine. There’s sappy red cherry, abundant peony, and black peppercorn. It’s spicy, fine textured, and not at all thin or lacking in flavor despite what might be perceived as low extraction- in other words, it is not a wine that is simply trendy and delicious but one that has savor, flair, character and soul. The finale of grapefruit and savory grip is utterly compelling.
