From Eric and Lyle Railsback comes the hottest grape of this August, Counoise. Light colored and light bodied, this rarely encountered variety is capable of expressing pretty red fruit, peppery notes and beautiful florality as well. Their small 0.88 acre (0.35ha) parcel in Alisos Canyon AVA in Santa Ynez has in 2020 produced fruit with tension and freshness. A truly fantastic surprise that reminds you why exploration in wine can be so rewarding.
This Counoise pours a pale red and I was caught off-guard by the intense aromatics of this young wine. There’s sappy red cherry, abundant peony, and black peppercorn. It’s spicy, fine textured, and not at all thin or lacking in flavor despite what might be perceived as low extraction- in other words, it is not a wine that is simply trendy and delicious but one that has savor, flair, character and soul. The finale of grapefruit and savory grip is utterly compelling.
