Castello di Verduno represents a literal marriage between Barolo and Barbaresco, the king and queen of Italian wine. When Gabriella Burlotto, a descendent of the founder of Verduno's most prestigious winery, G.B. Burlotto, married Franco Bianco, it presented a combination of some of each region's prized vineyards. Bianco whose familial holdings include Faset and one of Barbaresco's very best crus, Rabaja, allowed for Castello di Verduno to step outside their appellation to produce a classic-styled Barbaresco. It is uncommon for a Barbaresco to prominently feature such prestigious vineyards' grapes without bearing their names and therefore higher prices but winemaker Mario Andrion achieves that in this mineral-tinged, savory yet approachable wine.
