The Friuli region of Italy may be one of its most overlooked but it continues to gain momentum especially for its characterful white wines. The region sits at a cultural crossroads between Italy, the Slavic background of neighboring Slovenia and its roots as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. VIlla Russiz is representative of such a cultural mingling and was founded when Elvine Ritter von Zahony of the Hapsburgs married Théodor de la Tour of French nobility. As a wedding gift they were presented with 100 hectares of vineyards and in celebrating Thédor's heritage they were likely amongst the first in Friuli to plant French varietals. The estate's Pinot Grigio has a lovely soft, full texture with a refreshing touch of acidity on the finish. Indicative of it's Friulian upbringing this is mineral-edged wine with great texture and a desirable food friendly quality.
