Conterno, Giacosa, Mascarello, one can not discuss the keepers of the flame of traditionally-produced Nebbiolo without uttering these celebrated family names. The Giuseppe Mascarello estate (like that of the same-named but unrelated Bartolo estate) has a penchant for crafting Baroli with elegance, purity and structure signature of the noble Nebbiolo grape. The 'Santo Stefano di Perno' cru within Monforte d'Alba represents one of the Mascrello's 'newer' vineyard acquistions but still has over thirty years of history with the family. With comparison to the Mascarello holdings in their home commune of Castiglione Falletto, wines here display the power typical of more eastern Barolo vineyards while not sacrificing elegance and varietal purity.
