Tiny production? Check. Traditional vineyard and vinification techniques? Check Must-try, elegant, absolutely pure expressions of Sangiovese? Absolutely. Diego Molinari, tired of continuous jetlag, left his career as a pilot with Alitalia in 1977 and by 1981 had produced his first Brunello di Montalcino. Early on, the former pilot conveniently befriended Giulio Gambelli, who is celebrated as one of Montalcino's most gifted enologists. Cerbaiona produces just one Brunello and one Rosso di Montalcino, the latter of which often receives portions that could go into the former due to Molinari's extreme selectivity. These are dynamic Rosso di Montalcinos that easily outweigh the complexity of many a Brunello.
